How Drum Brakes Work? The cylinder is connected to a fixed back plate made of thick metal. Drum brake diagram dual servo rear drum brake. The back plate is fixed to the axle or spindle with bolts. Anchors riveted or bolted to the backing plate provide a stopping device for the brake shoe. In some vehicles, a single anchor point is placed at the top (dual servo), while in other vehicles, it is placed at the bottom (non servo), as shown in the following figure. Non servo settings are mainly used for small cars. When the driver presses the brake pedal, the hydraulic pressure generated in the brake master cylinder pushes the piston out of the wheel brake master cylinder through the hydraulic braking system. The piston pushes out the brake shoe. Therefore, the friction material (lining) comes into contact with the brake drum and slows down its rotation. The drum absorbs and dissipates the heat generated.
